Blast from the Past: Buying Mackenzie’s Baby

I wrote this one about six years ago and it was published by Samhain in September 2006.  I’m Blasting the Past with it today because to my complete shock, it’s #2 overall bestseller at Fictionwise.   I even took the screen grab hehe.  So here’s the blurb and a snippet of Buying Mackenzie’s Baby.

Flat broke and desperate, Kate Hartley runs to her ex-husband for help. However, his help comes with a high price. One she can’t refuse.

The morning after a high society party finds Kate Hartley in her ex-husband’s bed. Just a stupid mistake; something to put behind her… Until she discovers that she is pregnant.

Mack had never wanted children; had only married her in a rush of lust. Kate knows this. Nothing would drive her to ask anything of him. Nothing. But she’s homeless and flat broke. And it isn’t only her welfare now.

However, Mack has his own agenda. Kate had fooled him once; married him for his money. Whored herself… It was why he had divorced her. But now his grandfather has threatened his mother’s home if Mack doesn’t marry and produce an heir.

He had vowed never to marry again. But Kate Hartley is his only choice.

And pay back can be sweet…

The sudden fury in his face stopped the rest of her sentence. “Don’t even think of telling her.”

“I just thought–“

“Do I have to buy your silence? Is that what this is about?” Mack stood and began to pace. “I should have known better than to trust you with that information. But then I keep forgetting what kind of woman you are.”

Anger made her hands clench. Muscles tight, she rose from the sofa. “And what am I?” she demanded.

Mack raked his dark gaze over her and her skin flushed. “The colour fits.” She held down a shiver at the icy burn of his eyes. “A siren, a demon. Tormenting me.”

She couldn’t help the bark of laughter that escaped her. “Hardly.”

Her amusement made something harden in Mack’s face, intensified the fire in his eyes. “Playing innocent?” The softness of his voice sent prickles over her skin. He moved closer and Kate had to stop herself from backing away. Her heart hammered. “And all the while, scheming, finding weaknesses.”

His thumb traced the thin strap of her dress, followed it down over her breast. His touch on her bare skin, smooth, skimming, made her head light. Kate had to remember to breathe. “I should have realised what a formidable opponent you were, from the very beginning.”

“Mack.”

“But you had a veneer of fragility. So beguiling.”

Circling her, his fingertips stroked her skin. His mouth close to her ear, the heat of his breath, the almost press of his lips. Kate’s legs ran liquid. Damn it, he could not do this to her. She couldn’t let him create this need, this ache to have him. Right there. He traced the shell of her ear with his tongue. Kate gasped.

“But so wanton.” His fingers tugged at the zip low on her back.

Rational thought burst back into her brain with the cool wash of air over exposed skin. “Mack, this is wrong.” She pulled free, desperate to hold the loosened dress. Something still burned in him and it made her take a nervous back step. “You know that.”

“Since when has that stopped me?” His smile was wicked and his dark gaze slid over her legs, over her hips and stomach, narrowing on the hands that clung to her dress. Finally, it reached her face. Her skin had scorched in his wake and now she met his fiery gaze. Kate tried to deny what it did to her, the rush of heat under her skin, the sudden need pulsing through her veins. She tried to deny it. And failed.

The red silk of her dress slipped from her fingers.

Thank you for reading!

An excerpt from Emergence, a Red Hot SF-futuristic from Samhain Publishing

Someone was staring at me. I could feel it as a warm, easy slide over my skin, and it forced me to suck in a quick breath. I straightened, pushing my shoulders back, and my nipples peaked. It was an unexpected reaction. My gryphon-half barely reacted to sexual stimuli; power in all its forms was what got her hot. I glanced to my left and found the heated, amber gaze of a man at the end of the long bar.

A ghost of a smile lifted his mouth, and he raised his bottle of lager. Light sparked gold in his dark hair and over the sharp beauty of his face. The shadow surrounding him melted into the darkness. There was a hint of wings and horns, a mythoi shadow even more nebulous than my own. I had to wonder if a full gryphon would be able to see his complete glory. This man was something truly ancient, and the half-gryphon in me wanted that intensity.

He pushed himself away from the counter and walked towards me with a slow, measured gait that made my heart pound. This wasn’t me. I didn’t react to men like this. I reacted to wealth, position, the promise of power. It was why dragons owned us, after all. They’d supplied mythoi energy to the countries of the world for the last century, found for them by the gryphons who craved it. Was that it? The inherent power in the man, in his mythoi, was unlike anything I’d ever felt before.

“What are you?” Inwardly, I groaned. Great way to look like a complete idiot.

He leaned an elbow against the counter, and the brush of his shadow against mine rushed a prickle of gooseflesh over my skin. “A lowly hybrid,” he murmured, and his hint of self-mockery pricked at me. “But you,” the tip of the bottle followed the blurred edges of my shadow in a lazy, skin-rippling caress, “golden and so, so strong.” The quick, unconscious wetting of his lips with the tip of his tongue had the urge to taste him, to sink my teeth into his firm, bottom lip, flushing heat under my skin. “Truly beautiful.”

“Are you a regular here?” He eased closer, the slide of his shadow over and through mine making my breath short and my chest tight. I turned to him, unable to stop myself. My question had been little more than a squeak, and I willed more strength into my voice. “Because really, if I’d known, I’d have come here more often.”

His finger brushed over my cheek, and the contact was electric. “Semi-regular.” He threaded through to my hair, holding me, his lips only inches from mine. “And I think we should take…this…away from mere mortals.”

“This?” The question came out on a little burst of air. “We’re at a…this…already?”

His quick grin warmed his amber eyes to a deep, intoxicating gold. “Aren’t we?” He put his beer bottle on the counter and took another step closer to me. The heat of his body brushed over me now, his spiced scent sliding into my lungs. “And there’s enough of the mythoi in both of us to have those pure-bloods falling on each other.” He paused, and my blood pounded in my ears as he focused on my mouth. The soft, rich murmur of his voice made me wet for him and nothing, nothing else mattered.

“And I don’t think that’s what they came for.”

“Is this what you came for?”

“Me? Yes.” His unhurried smile eased through me. “You’re irresistible.”

“So much flattery.”

“I am far from insincere.” The first brush of his lips against mine forced a gasp, maybe from both of us. “Trust me.”

“Who are you?”

“Kaden Rhodes.”

It wasn’t one of the family names I recognised, yet he sounded British…which didn’t make sense. Every one of the mythoi was catalogued—

“Thinking too much,” he murmured, and his mouth hovered over mine, so close everything else simply fell away. “Who I am isn’t important right now. What I want to do is.”

Kaden’s cooled fingers teased along my bare thigh, and the need to take his mouth fired through me. I’d come to the club for this, to find a man with whom to lose my final hours of freedom…but it felt too fast, and there was something else that had my nerves straining. Something about him burned as hungry and dangerous as the karkadann.

He lifted an eyebrow. “Second thoughts…?”

“Jaime.” Only the wild thud of my heart echoed in my ears. I didn’t want second thoughts. I wanted to be naked with this man as soon as possible. Hell, I was half gryphon. Having that much of the beast in my genome meant I could shift my shape and my mythoi came with a razor sharp beak, talons and wings. A smile curved my mouth. “I have a suite at the Waterfront Hotel.”

Kaden’s smile deepened and his eyes shone. His finger traced over my bottom lip, and the urge to tease him with my tongue tip rioted through me. “You’re rich?”

Was there something of the gryphon in him? The need for wealth, we couldn’t help it…but unfortunately, he was wrong. The First Dragon had liquefied all my assets, as meagre as they were, and taken them for himself, but not before I’d splurged on nights in a luxurious suite. It hadn’t made me forget that, in a few hours, he would own everything about me. “I’m treating myself on my last night of freedom.”

His eyes narrowed. “A final fling?”

My gut tightened, but he wasn’t pulling back. And really, it was best that the attractive stranger understood that our…this…could go nowhere. The First Dragon would choose my mate, if he let me take one at all. Only profitable gryphons bred after long service. Anyway, mythoi didn’t cross species to find a mate. I really had no clue what Kaden was.

I pulled in a slow breath. “My only fling. My life will get complicated tomorrow.”

“Then tonight will be simple.” He stood back and held out his hand. “Shall we?

Breaking Chance – Available now!

What a girl wants and what a girl needs are sometimes two different things…

For Melissa “Lucky” Chance, another stretch in Ganymede’s ice prison is nothing new. The flash-freeze that’s supposed to destroy her will only leaves her with an insatiable desire for the first hot body she lays eyes on. Except this time, she faces a death sentence. Her only hope of escape lies with the man known as The Butcher.

John Ramius understands the logic behind his conviction as a criminally insane mass murderer. No man should have been able to slaughter over fifty men in as many minutes, but no one sees the underlying curse that compels him to sense—and fulfill—someone’s deepest need. Chance’s skill will free him to kill the Sun-King; he will find no rest until he does.

As they run from the forces of the Jovian colonies, Ramius finds himself temporarily sidetracked, not only by Chance’s relentless desire, but by her underlying, unspoken need. Ignoring it—or his own compulsion to do every wicked thing imaginable to her—is not an option.

Only after all their defenses are stripped away do they discover that their meeting wasn’t by chance. Someone is manipulating them both, and the only way out is the path to their destruction…

Excerpt
(c)2010 Kim Knox

“I saw you looking.”

Colour flushed under his cheeks—a strange reaction for a psychopath—but then his darkened eyes fixed on her. The intent in them dried her mouth. She had to have imagined the embarrassed burn under his skin. “You want men to look.” A door rolled open in the smooth wall, and he pushed her forward. Soft light chased around the curve of the ceiling and illuminated a basic console room, instrumentation glowing, its hum working under skin. The door slid back, a series of clunks and a long hiss securing it. He released her arm. “You’re offended when I don’t look.”

Fina Brodie has been genetically engineered by her government to serve a specific purpose – to give the ultimate pleasure.  She is sent in when her special brand of “negotiation” is required to complete treaties.  The Emperor has sent her to Kian, Lord of the Tir, for a public sex ceremony to facilitate securing access to spice-water, an incredible aphrodisiac.  She is horrified to learn that her escort for this mission is the one man she has always loved but could never have, Jonathon Raegh.  Unbeknownst to Fina, he is meant to participate in the ritual with her.  What secret plans do the people of Tir hold for Fina and Jon?

Let me start by telling you to just go ahead and get the fire extinguisher and a bucket of ice before you start reading.  Trust me – you’re going to need it!  The heat from Fina and Jon is there right from ground zero and it quickly builds into an inferno.  As interesting as Fina’s story is, Jon is the one I really got caught up in.  Right away he hits you with his smoldering passion and you can’t help but wish it was directed towards you.  Jon is a man full of passion.  Combine that with a woman made for sex and throw in a heap of unrequited love and you’ve got quite a conflagration.  It’s not just sexual hunger that exists between the two, but magnetism stemming from a lifetime of love and desire for each other.  Finally, thanks to this mission, their long-denied attraction is no longer forbidden.  The sex was incredible.  Thanks to the effects of spice-water, the foreplay starts just a few pages in and it doesn’t take long before the passion and buildup between Fina and Jon explodes.  Once they get to the ceremony it just gets hotter with an unbelievable ménage scene.  This story ishot, hot, hot!!!, yet you still get your HEA. This is what sci-fi erotic romance should be.

A prehensile tail has its advantages…

Scar’s marbled skin and stunted tail aren’t all that make her stand out. Her Caraniae DNA has a strange effect on the male of the species, which makes her career as a pilot perfect. The less interaction she has with people—with men—the better. She won’t risk her wayward pheromones bonding her forever to one man.

Then there’s her boss’s new bodyguard, Anthony Tyler. The pure-human is tight-lipped about his sketchy past. He also seems determined to work her prehensile tail off.

Once imprisoned and drummed out of the Corps for conduct unbecoming, Tyler is intrigued with his ship’s unheard-of, human-Caraniae hybrid. He spent his career fighting her kind, but when a message from home throws Scar into a tailspin, he finds himself drawn to help her in any way he can. Even if it means risking life and limb to help her sweat out her anger.

Their sparring session turns into something else. Something wildly sexual. Something so wrong as to be suicidal—if Scar’s father discovers she’s bonded with anyone other than the husband he’s forcing her to marry…

Satin Spar is a racy sci-fi lover’s delight that engages the reader and stimulates the imagination. Kim Knox has created something wholly unique that is both hot and captivating, ensuring a reader will maintain an interest in the characters, the plot, and keep going to discover what is sure to be an unpredictable conclusion.

I have to confess that I wasn’t sure what to think about Scar initially. She’s not your typical heroine, but rather is a hybrid of races. The fact that she has a stubby tail threw me off from time to time, although I openly confess that it’s an issue others probably won’t even bat an eyelash at. Physical attributes aside, she’s smart, willful, and determined, which are essential characteristics when you want a strong female protagonist.

As for Tyler, well, he’s all human male. Sexy, hot, primal. I couldn’t get enough of him, and couldn’t wait until he caved to his desires and claimed Scar as the female he refuses to share. It was interesting to see a man snared by the “mating” scent for a change, and I loved the new slant Ms. Knox created in bringing two very different people, from two very different worlds, together.

There is plenty of angst and tension along the way for our hero and heroine, and the journey proves to be a thoroughly enjoyable ride. I loved the world, the creatures, the fantastical elements and rituals, and the characters who bring it all together. Fans of sizzling hot sci-fi will devour Satin Spar from beginning to end. The writing is fantastic, the concept is original, and the chemistry between Scar and Tyler will leave you breathless.

Enthusiasts of the fantasy genre, take note, and be sure to put Satin Spar on your TBR list. You get the heat, you get the passion, and the result is a very memorable, and entertaining, story.

Sales and other happy things

Sunday was a bit of a mad day.

I got an email saying that TOUCH OF A DRAGON had reached the next round of the Loose Id Hot Hooks contest.  I now have to finish and polish that story to within an inch of its life by 1 Feb 2010.

I got another email from my EC editor, saying yes, she’d love to contract my fantasy menage novel HER DARK SOUL 😀  The contract is winging its way across the pond as I type.  You can get a sneak peek of the story further down in my blog.  Here’s the link.

Then I sold SHAPES IN THE BLOOD to Loose Id.  Yep.  On the same day!  The contract is keeping the other one company, lol Here’s the unofficial blurb for Shapes.  I’m still working on the Her Dark Soul’s blurb.

Aila Parry is a disaster waiting to happen.

Bad luck dogs her, has followed her all her life, ever since her grandmother’s heated warning when she was only three years old. Food spoils, metal stresses and breaks, equipment fails…and people are wary of her, forming strange hatreds, or worse shunning her completely. Men run scared. Which is why her colleague, Nathan Ahern’s, interest stuns—and delights—her. But Nathan is not all that he appears to be. And the only need he has for Aila is the desire to spill her blood. Matt Kinnon, a tempting stranger, a man compelled to guard the human race from creatures like Nathan, offers her protection.

But can she trust a man who is as much a demon as the one who wants her dead?

And the fourth piece of good news I got was from Samhain.  Weaving Words will be offered as a Kindle freebie from 15-28 December.  So a nice little Christmas present for all new Kindle owners 😀

Satin Spar releases today

Satin SparDRAFTV4Satin Spar is one of those stories that every writer has.  It’s bugged me, lurked in the back of my brain and would not go away.  Seriously, Scar and Tyler have been in my head in some form for more years than I want to admit.  I’ve toyed with them, given them different settings, lifestyles, endings…and then finally, probably out of sheer desperation, I gave my heroine, Scar, a tail.

Bam! The story fell into place in about three weeks. Characters are evil, aren’t they?

So, to go all Galaxy Quest: ‘Never give up, never surrender’ when it comes to characters who won’t leave you alone. Or alternatively, give them a tail and see what happens…

Here’s the blurb from Satin Spar, which releases today:
