Excerpt

“Arrogant, stupid, selfish…arsehole!”

I clacked my teeth together before more bitter words broke from me. Because this was fucking idiotic.

And freezing.

I pulled at my scarf, urging the thick wool around my neck and tucking my chin and nose into its warmth. The huff of my breath still escaped, forming a white mist, and I shivered. Around me the wood was thick-black, heavy with the spike of dense branches and no hint of the silvered moon that gleamed in the chilled sky.

My torch cut a white light through the darkness, picking out gnarled tree roots and the wet stink of fallen leaves. Little animal feet skittered away from its brightness through the leaf-litter and I tramped on. No attempt made to be silent as I huffed and swore and my heavy boots snapped over twigs and rotted bark or sloshed through sucking mud.

Why should I be quiet?

I wasn’t the one hiding.

No, I was heading into a dank and freezing forest instead of being wrapped up in blankets before the drugging heat of an open fire, or sinking into an old and comfy chair in the local pub, or…well, anything other than hunting for the big, hulking coward that was Kerr Lennox.

My supposed blood-mate.

I thought…I thought expressing my interest would be a sensible conversation before the moon took him. Well, maybe not sensible. I had declared his argument, his position…crap, after all.

But something where there was warmth, a fire. Tea. Wine, if it was going well.

Not…this.

My belly twisted, the fear pushing up through the bitterness to catch my heart in an old pain. The one pinned, however unwanted, under everything. That he…he would rather face a withering and lonely death than bind himself to me. Be with me. Because…because I was broken.

Nestor sank back into his chair, the wood and leather groaning under his weight. “We’ve been lucky. Damned lucky.” He wiped a hand over his face, and the strain showed through deep lines and sagging skin. The strain of trying to fight an impossibly powerful enemy. “Chance brought Achilles to me. And capturing the equipment from Holt Hall? More luck than we’ve had in years.”

Frost tutted and pushed his hands into the deep pockets of his dressing gown. He lifted his chin. “Consummate skill, Nestor. Bolstered by the bravery of the English soldier.”

The older man gave a rough laugh. “Of course.”

Frost frowned at the glass screen. “Hollow ships. That’s not a phrase connected to the aeolipile engines. It suggests something bigger than we’ve seen.”

Nestor briefly shut his eyes, and the low mutters breaking from him sounded very much like curses. “We’re insects pricking a rousing dragon. Pandarus has every advantage. Every single one. Weapons unlike any other. Unlike anything man could imagine. We can name only a few of his converted warriors. And Pandarus himself could be anyone. He could stand in this very room, in those unholy shells he creates, and I wouldn’t know him.” He stared at the screen and a vein throbbed in his temple. “But…we need to find these ships. Destroy them. Your charge is to track down Pandarus and stop him. If you don’t, England, the empire, the world will fall.”

The chains creaked above their heads and Rider leaned forward. Sutton didn’t flinch, even though his prisoner’s mouth was millimetres from his own. If he was infected, the danger was very real. Even a drop of saliva contained enough nano-forms to infect him.

His want was irrational. He had a natural skill and the training to withstand the surge of apian pheromones. But,    the need to fist his fingers in Rider’s wild hair and take his mouth burned in him.

“Who’s your type?” Rider paused and the hot shine in his eyes made thinking difficult. “Because, right now, you want nothing more than to take me and fuck me. Do it, Lieutenant.” He wet his lips. “Do it now.”
